OUR PREGNANCY RESOURCE CENTER TEAM

board of directors

Karen Klassen
Chair  (Joined in 2018)

I am an Assistant Professor at Salt Lake Community College where I teach a variety of Computer Science courses.  My husband and I have three grown daughters and two wonderful grandchildren.  We enjoy camping and hiking during the summer months, during the winter we tend to hibernate and enjoy time with friends.  I also play golf as much as possible when the weather cooperates, and go to see my grand-kids as much as I can.

I grew up in a small town in West Texas, as an only child.  I went to Dallas to pursue my Bachelor Degree in Computer Information Systems.  While at college I started attending church and after a year or so, I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior.  God changed my life in many ways.  He has been faithful over the years, even though I have strayed away at times.  I know without a doubt that my Savior lives, he intercedes for me, he loves me and watches over me daily.  I am truly blessed to be alive and placed here at this time.

I once benefited from a local Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC), I relinquished my parental rights as a parent in December of 1987 and ever since have wanted to be involved in a PRC.  I never found the time to actually engage in a local PRC, due to being a stay at home mom for many years.  Now that I am in a new season of life, I want to invest in the lives of others, especially at a PRC.  Over the years, I have talked with many young people about my choice and have encouraged them in their choices as well.

Since 2007 I have been practicing Regenerative Medicine, using our own body’s stem cells – not those from an embryo – to treat musculoskeletal conditions, such as rotator cuff tears, osteoarthritis and others. I see the beauty of the wonderful body God has created and the effects that sin has caused in His creation. These cellular treatments at least get us a little closer to the healthy bodies that God intended us to have. I have a passion for life and liberty. Thus, my interest in serving with the Pregnancy Resource Center.

I grew up in Yonkers, NY, just outside of NY City and was raised Catholic. What else would you be as an Italian in NY? Currently, I describe myself as an evangelical Christian who loves God, His creation and these great bodies He gave us. My medical training is in Family Practice (University of Utah) and Sports Medicine (Michigan State University). I served in the USAF and USAF Reserves for 27+ years as a Flight Surgeon flying in the greatest aircraft ever made, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, and traveled the world, most of the time to places you wouldn’t choose to vacation.

I am married with two boys and like to do anything physical in my spare time. I’ve played hockey since I was 7 years old and almost every sport since then. My current passion is cyclocross racing.

I am a board-certified Family Medicine physician who graduated with a B.A. from the University of Utah, received my medical degree (with a Honors in Bioethics) from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, and completed my residency at St. Anthony North Family Medicine Residency in Westminster, Colorado. I practice full-spectrum Family Medicine, delivering pediatric, maternity, and adult care, and I have special interests in preventive medicine and education.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family, going on medical mission trips, hiking, and journaling.

I was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod), and I am grateful for the faith the Holy Spirit inspired and nurtured in me. I believe Jesus is Lord, Redeemer, Mighty Counselor and the Divine Physician, and it is my duty and joy to honor, trust and obey Him as I seek to use all He has gifted me to serve Him and my neighbor.

I am delighted to serve on the Pregnancy Resource Center Board of Directors, hoping to enhance the center’s ability to deliver the best possible care, while also “speaking the truth in love” to help clients make the healthiest decisions. As science proves, life begins at conception, and I believe every life is precious. “ I want to advocate for those who have no voice, to empower women and men to choose life, to provide support or resources for our clients, and to help relieve suffering, pain, confusion, and other ailments.

This is a privileged time in my life as I am retired from a very demanding position as director of health information management in a large hospital, and now I have the opportunity to give back time and energy to a cause I believe in, that of valuing and preserving the lives of the unborn.  Many years ago I found myself in an unplanned pregnancy, so I can empathize with those who are in that situation.  I went on to marry and have that child who became God’s enormous gift in my life.  He showed me personally how He takes broken people, broken lives, and makes something beautiful of them.  My first child is now herself a counselor touching a great many lives with the goodness God has given her.  She has told others, “I could have been an abortion” which speaks volumes to the hearers.

I am now a mother of four children, stepmother to five more, grandmother to sixteen beautiful children.  It is a truly special time in my life.  I enjoy studying God’s word,  traveling, gardening, games with friends, and time with family.  I look forward to being part of a team that has eternal ramifications, that of preserving life.

I am a Certified Public Accountant and have spent my career in various audit and accounting roles in governmental agencies including The Utah State Auditor’s Office, Utah Department of Health (Division of Medicaid & Health Financing), and currently at Salt Lake Community College where I serve as the Director of Internal Audit. My professional passion is ensuring that organizations operate under a structure of sound business practices that encourage transparency, accountability, and proper internal controls. I’m honored to be able to use the skills and passions I have developed in my career as a board member of the Pregnancy Resource Center.

I am a native Utahn, having grown up in Davis County. I recognized as a teenager that I was in need of a savior, and invited Christ into my heart at age 14. The most formative years of my faith journey occurred while attending Utah State University, where I graduated with bachelor’s degrees in accounting and economics, and a master’s degree in accounting. During my time at USU, I grew in my understanding of God’s great love for people, including the unborn. It was also during this time where I met my wife (our first week of school!). Together, we are the parents of a son and a daughter and are enjoying as much time with them as possible before they are all grown.

Tammy Hawes, RN, BSN
Volunteer Nurse

I was born and raised in central Kansas where I also went to college and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Nursing. I then worked in Wichita at a hospital as an OB nurse then later in a clinic setting.

I met my husband the first day of college and we have been married 24 years. He has family here in Salt Lake City, and so we moved here to be close to them 16 years ago. We have three awesome teenagers one of which just moved to Kansas to go to college.

I was drawn to the PRC by hearing about it at church and through friends. It was an exciting opportunity for me to be able to use my medical skills to minister in my community. Volunteering here at the PRC has had its challenging moments but it is sweet to see how God works and is sovereign. Many times while performing the ultrasounds when I think a good picture is impossible God brings about the perfect one or shows an amazing heartbeat that is just what that mom/family needs to see. It is a great place to be able to work alongside awesome staff who are also passionate about what they do and about serving Christ.I was born and raised in central Kansas where I also went to college and graduated with a Bachelors in Nursing. Alicia Toscano
Client Services Manager

I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and have lived here most of my life minus a few years in Arizona and Colorado.  I have worked within the medical administrative side my entire career until recently. I felt an unsettling and God calling me to do more.

By the time I was 18, I had 2 sons.  I showed up at the doors of the Pregnancy Resource Center in 1995 to confirm my first pregnancy.  I was terrified and uncertain of what to expect.  I was met with love and acceptance that day and I never forgot how impactful that experience was from that visit.

I am now happily married, and my sons are 21 and 23 years old.  I truly feel God does use each and every journey to bring beauty from it all.  I am so thankful to be part of such a powerful, life changing center that for me, is very personal.  In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family, camping and reading a good book.
